Privacy Vs Streaming Vs Live TV

According to some sources Video Piracy in Australia is dropping from anywhere around 3% – 25%, it supposedly hit an all time high in 2014, due to an overwhelming need to obtain good quality content quickly, easily and affordably. Many feel that they have been left behind in Australia with access to good content. This changed earlier in 2015 with the addition of Subscription Streaming services like, Netflix, Stan and Presto; giving Foxtel a run for its money. Subscriptions increased by over 20% this year alone. Netflix saw its membership hit one million in a very short period of time, by offering lower subscription prices in areas of high piracy, thus making it easier for many Australians to go Legit!

With the addition of the Government’s’ Data Retention Program and the mass confusion regarding what is and what isn’t covered (read here), and the belief that the possibility of being convicted of piracy has increased significantly, people are turning away from the Torrent approach and comfortably and affordably accessing streaming content with cheap subscription services. The only bee in the bonnet these days is the internet speeds available in Australia and the halt/ lack of NBN Coverage. Perhaps that is a topic for another day?

With all that said more and more Australians are turning away from Live Free to Air TV, with more than 34% of Aussies now turning to the likes of Netflix. The Networks can moan and groan about it, however they really only have themselves to blame. The main complaints are not so much a lack of quantity, but the lack of quality and unreliable programming, plus of course the ads!

2. Has too many ads
3. Does not stick to a consistent schedule
4. Does not play series in full

Finally! – High Definition Digital TV going Prime Time

Since the early days of digital TV, the network broadcasters have been forced to only air SD on their main primary channel, this bill was introduced in 1992 to assure that all Australians were on an equal footing when it came to digital TV. The problem is we have been forced to still deal with this, even though most Australians have HD compatible TVs or DVR/Set Top Boxes. We have been forced to watch most of our shows and sport in SD. No wonder people complain, we have now got digital TV, but no HD Content?

Finally, in September the bill to lift current restrictions was amended, allowing TV Networks broadcast whatever they like in HD, too late for the prime sport such as AFL, NRL Grand Finals. We will hopefully see more HD on more channels, possibly pulling people back to Network Broadcaster TV Land.
